The Brendan Hession Foundation Scholarship
2012 Meningitis Survivor Educational Assistance Award

$1,500 Educational Assistance Award to a Meningitis Survivor
The Brendan Hession Foundation Scholarship is given in memory of Brendan James Hession who
died on March 17, 1997 of bacterial meningitis. He was seventeen years old. Brendan loved life,
learning, music, making people laugh, and just being Brendan. He was a bright and gifted student
who, at the time of his death, had qualified as a National Merit semi-finalist.
Meningitis killed Brendan in sixteen hours, but other young people have survived this terrible disease. Many, however, are left to face life with crippling disabilities. Yet face life they do, with determination and courage.
Brendan never had the chance to achieve his academic goals, but the Brendan Hession Foundation
would like to assist other students – those who have survived meningitis – reach theirs.
The 2012 scholarship recipient must meet the following criteria:
- Be a meningitis survivor
- Be in pursuit of a secondary education at an accredited college, university, technical, or
vocational school
- Be a student in good standing at their current educational institution
- Be in need of financial assistance
