what are the sypmtoms of it?

Marybeth Leeber responds:

The symptoms of meningococcal disease are often confused with those of the flu. The early symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, headache, vomiting, confusion and a rash. If left untreated the disease can progress very quickly, often within hours, and can lead to brain damage, hearing loss, kidney disease, loss of limbs and even death. If anyone has two or more of these symptoms that came on suddenly or severe, they should seek medical attention immediately.
