Is it possible to know if my daughter 17 now, had meningitis at 6 months old and again at 15 months old?

Lori Buher responds:

Hi. Your question would best be answered by your doctor or health care professional. I don’t have the medical expertise to know the answer. I’m sorry I can’t help you with it!

I wonder if your daughter is currently vaccinated? Vaccination is the best protection available. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all children between the ages of 11 and 18 receive the meningococcal conjugate vaccine. It’s expected to provide protection for at least 8 years and is effective against 4 of the 5 strains of bacteria that cause mennincococcal meningitis. When my son contracted the disease at age 14 (in 2003), we knew that we should have his older brother and sister vaccinated before they left for college, but we didn’t know he could contract it. Thankfully he survived and is doing well today, but he suffered multiple amputations, endured months in hospitals and…. it changed his life forever.

All the best, and please contact us if you have any other questions!
