I was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis when I was 17, a little over 22 years ago. I am trying to find out what long term effects this disease has on those who survive. I have been going through various medical issues, particularly with my spine, and am curious if there is a connection. If someone can direct me to information about the long term effects of this disease, I would be most grateful. Thank you, Linda Moshier, Long Island, NY
Lori Buher responds:
Hello Linda: I am sorry that NMA can’t answer your question – the medical nature of it is out of our area of expertise. You should talk to your health care provider to get a qualified answer! I have the same question myself. Our son is a survivor – he was 14 (he is 20 now) and suffered multiple organ failures and amputations. When asked, his doctors have been pretty non-commital about the long-term effects. We are all so thankful our son survived, we have been content to just enjoy each day and…hope for the best. He might feel differently as he gets older.
