Ginny Marso responds:

I am very sorry to learn of your sister’s serious illness. Most of us became involved with the National Meningitis Association because someone in our own families developed meningitis, so we certainly sympathize.

You refer to “tuberculosis meningitis.” Meningitis is a broad term, meaning a disease which is marked by inflammation of the meninges, or membranes, either of the spine or of the brain. NMA focuses on educating and increasing awareness surrounding meningococcal meningitis, which is a dangerous form of bacterial meningitis.

Given the medical nature of your question, I strongly encourage you to speak with your sister’s doctor and, if you don’t get the right information there, ask for a second opinion. When my son was hospitalized, I found that it was very important to be a real advocate for your family member.

Again, our thoughts are with you.
